Somerset Irish Draughts
A small family stud breeding top show quality Irish Draughts and Irish Draught Sport Horses for temperament, athleticism and ability.
About the stud
We are a small, family-run stud farm based at Wheddon Cross on Exmoor in Somerset. Our aim is simple: to breed Irish Draughts and Irish Draught Sport Horses of real show quality, drawing on the very best Irish Draught bloodlines available.
Every horse we breed is chosen with three qualities in mind — a kind, sensible temperament, natural athleticism, and genuine ability — the traits that have made the Irish Draught so loved as a partner in and out of the ring.
Our horses
Irish Draughts
Class 1 Irish Draughts bred from carefully selected bloodlines, valued for their soundness, substance and famously good nature.
Irish Draught Sport Horses
Sport horses combining Irish Draught temperament with the athleticism and scope for a range of disciplines.

Open Day 2026
On Saturday 12 September 2026, from noon to 4pm, we welcomed visitors to the stud at Combeshead Farm, Wheddon Cross.
Guests heard from Tom Gliddon MRCVS, a leading stud vet and Leading Equine Practitioner, and from Heather Chaplin, IDHS(GB) inspector and Irish Draught judge, who ran a conformation workshop. There was a Somerset cream tea at The Cake Barn and a BBQ from Richard Little.
Thank you to everyone who came along — it was lovely to meet you, the feedback was wonderful, and we already have ideas for next year's Open Day. Follow us on Facebook to hear about it first.
